Learn The History Of Design In Under 15 Minutes

In his recent interview with The New York Times, Kanye West said the greatest inspiration for his new album, Yeezus, came from a lamp by Le Corbusier . Like me, you may have been thinking, “Le Corbu-who?” Well, fret not. While modern pop culture may demand that we brush up on the design movements of history (of which Le Corbusier was a prime figure), the guys over at The Open University (the distance-learning website) have created a suite of short videos called “Design in a nutshell”. These fast-paced, diagrammatic, and minimally animated cartoons narrated by actor Ewan McGregor seek to make several important historical art and design movements seem at least mildly relevant to our digitally disrupted lives. The videos provide an overview of Gothic Revival; Arts and Crafts; Bauhaus; Modernism; American Industrial Design; and Postmodernism. Scope them out below.
