Sofia Coppola’s “Somewhere” – Trailer

16 Jun

Here is the trailer for Somewhere, Sofia Coppola’s first film since 2006’s Marie Antoinette which may or may not signal the career combeback of Stephen Dorff. The last time I saw Dorff, he was playing Britney Spears’ boyfriend in the video clip for “Everytime”. At best, the dude’s career has been bipolar – he’s experienced vague success with films like Backbeat, Blade, I Shot Andy Warhol and Cecil B. DeMented and definite failure with drivel like Fear Dot Com and Alone in the Dark. Somewhere sees him play Johnny Marco, a hard-living Hollywood actor staying at the Chateau Marmont and going through an existential crisis – until a surprise visit from his 11-year-old daughter (played by Elle Fanning, Dakota’s sister) makes him reevaluate his life. Dorff has been working in Hollywood since the age of 12. He caught his big break at 19 playing a British youth of the apartheid-era in The Power of One, opposite John Gielgud, Morgan Freeman and Daniel Craig. Dorff’s work since has always been unpredictable which makes his performances interesting. I’ve always sort of thought his career has been permanently on the cusp, promising a greatness that hasn’t yet been achieved. Now at the age of 36, could Somewhere be it?

So I just watched Somewhere. It is one of my favourite films of 2010. It’s a study of celebrity culture as well as a touching tale of a bloke realising what counts in life. Go watch it.
