Anton Corbijn is the trigger man responsible for some of the most recongisable photography in music (think U2’s Joshua Tree and Depeche Mode’s Ultra). In 2007 Corbijn ventured into the world of the moving image with Control, the story of the life and death of Ian Curtis, lead singer of Joy Division. The movie was beautifully shot in black and white and showed that Corbijn was one to watch. This year sees the release of The American, Corbijn’s new thriller starring George Clooney. When a job in Sweden ends more harshly than expected, soon-to-be-retired assasin Jack (Clooney) reports to the quiet Italian countryside awaiting his final instructions. Of course, things don’t remain quiet for long. While the story sounds familiar, from the look of this trailer, it seems that Corbijn’s lush visuals combined with Clooney’s depth of character will make this a must-see.
