Jacques Audiard’s Un Prophète (A Prophet)

Last week I watched the French film Un Prophète (The Prophet). It was off-the-hook! Directed by Jacques Audiard, it’s a dynamite prison-gangster flick. The up-and-coming Tahar Rahim (pictured above) plays Malik El Djebena, a young Arab guy facing a six-year stretch in prison for violence against police. He is a 19-year-old petty criminal who has just graduated from juvi to adult detention. Enter César (played by Niels Arestrup), the Corsican mobster with the warden in his pocket, who recruits Malik to whack a fellow prisoner. What follows is an epic and complex crime saga with real grit, soul and finesse.

The feel of this movie was reminiscent of the recent Italian mafia film Gomorrah (one of my faves from last year and another film you should check out if you haven’t already).
