Phillip Toledano

Artist Phillip Toledano’s latest project started with a simple question: If American foreign policy had a gift shop, what would it sell? He explores the answer(s) in his online installation project titled, America the Gift Shop. Toledano has taken familiar souvenirs and artefacts from America’s culture of mass consumption and has twisted them to highlight the political wrongs of the last eight years. As the website states, “once the sugar coating of the ordinary dissolves, we are left with the hard and uncomfortable truth about where we’ve been as a nation”. Highlights of the installation include an Abu Ghraib Coffee Table, Dick Cheney paper shredding snow globe, and the Choc and Awe Chocolate Bar.
