How the Greatest Movie One-Liners Of All Time Can Inspire Your Business

19 03 2009

Gene Stark has written a nice piece for Australian Anthill Magazine about how businesses can improve the return on their marketing investment by taking some advice from great movie one-liners:

It’s not called the silver screen for nothing. Improve the return on your marketing investment using these unforgettable classics to find, attract and retain customers.TV advertisers have only 30 seconds to build rapport with their intended target audience and tell the whole story. The first five to 10 seconds are critical. Headlines in newspapers and magazines grab attention and are the deciding factor in whether the article is read or not. “On the average, five times as many people read the headline as read the body copy,” said David Ogilvy, the father of modern advertising.

When talking about movies we recall funny, shocking and, in general, unforgettable scenes. However, we most remember and repeat the “one-liners” – the headlines, the movie positioning statement equivalent. They encapsulate the brand and propel the movie into the Hall of Fame.

The following greatest movie “one-liners” are memorable and hence will provide unforgettable advice that is simple, useful and, most importantly, fun.

Luke Haynes

You may think that the craft of quilting is the domain of retirement homes – but artist Luke Haynes is challenging that assumption. Subverting the traditional quilting form by integrating modern concepts (by working from photographs), Haynes transforms the comfortably familiar into something more edgy. As his website says, “Haynes disassembles, digests, and reconstructs images as progressive cloth murals”. Me likey.

The official poster for Spike Jonze’s eagerly anticipated Where The Wild Things Are has been released! I can’t freakin’ wait for this movie!

The movie, filmed just outside of Melbourne, combines live action, suitmation, animatronics and CGI. You can read an interview with Spike Jonze about the making of the movie (that I posted last year) here.

This bracelet is H-to-the-oh-T! Made from bullet casings with a brass chain and a toggle closure, it’s ripe for the street and just what you need if you’re looking to add a splash of MIA to your outfit. Made by New York-based artist, Shannon De Jong the ‘Bullet Bracelet’ is from her Tex Astali range of jewelry. De Jong has a knack for collecting discarded objects and crafting them into something ‘new’. You can see more of her work here.

N.W.A. Movie?

17 03 2009

It seems as if Notorious B.I.G.’s biopic is opening up doors for other legendary Hip Hop acts to tell their stories by way of the silver screen.

Sources are reporting that there is a N.W.A. (Niggaz With Attitude) biopic in the works that will highlight the rise and fall of N.W.A. The group were signed to Hip Hop’s bad boy, Suge Knight’s label, Death Row Records and included Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, Eazy-E, and MC. Ren.

The movie is said to be produced by Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, and Tomica Wright (Eazy-E’s widow). It will chronicle the creation and dismantling of the group, the impact the group had on Hip Hop, and the tragic death of Eazy-E to AIDS.

Be My Brother

14 03 2009

Be My Brother is the winner of the 2009 Australian Tropfest Short Film Festival. The film was written and directed by 20-year-old, Genevieve Clay. The film looks at society and people with disabilities feeling displaced due to prejudices. It sounds like heavy stuff – but the short is filled with humour and pathos. Clay was inspired to make the film after meeting its star, Gerard O’Dwyer, while working on a documentary about young people with Down Syndrome. Take some time out to watch and enjoy.

Book Club

5 03 2009

book-club1

When I think of book clubs I tend to get an image of 40-somethings sitting around a fire in ugly jumpers expressing their opinions on the latest suggested title from Oprah.  But, thanks to local Canberra designers Simon Gibson and Sergio Bodulovic, that image is about to change. Book Club is a new clothing label featuring jeans, sweatshirts and shirts. Importantly, all of the product is Australian made – even the fabrics are knitted in Australia. The designs are minimalist and structured – but it’s the cut of the clothes which really differentiates Book Club from the rest of the crowd – especially in the case of their jeans.

Simon and Serge have spent the last year sussing out the fashion industry, trying to figure out the best way to go about completing their range – sometimes with outcomes far from ideal. But, the hard work has paid off and the Book Club look is original and fresh. Each piece in the range is, rather fittingly, named after a famous author. My particular favourite? The Steinbeck jeans – for those times you want to look like an inner-city Tom Joad. They are, quite simply, dope. Check out the gallery below to view some of the range and see more at the Book Club website.

For those of you in Canberra, the lads will be launching Book Club next week at local retailer iTrip i Skip. The party will double as a sale with special prices for punters. Visit an ATM beforehand though, because sales will be cash only.

Date: Friday, 13 March 2009
Time: 6:00pm – 11:00pm
Location: Itrip Iskip
Street: 30 Lonsdale St Braddon, Canberra.

A friend sent me these pics of quirky street posters from Melbourne today. I’m not sure how current they are – but they seem to be the work of some guy called Craig. I like the idea – it’s definitely a quirky conversation starter.

MGMT’s ‘Kids’ Performed on the iPhone

4 03 2009

Watch the Mentalists play ‘Kids’ by MGMT on their iPhones and iPod Touches. Apparently they are only using apps from the Apple App Store including Ocarina, Retro Synth, miniSynth and DigiDrummer Lite to make the track.

The Work of Stefan Bruggeman

Stefan Bruggeman is an artist who was born in Mexico but currently lives and works between Mexico City and London. His text installations of black vinyl lettering against white walls are so fucking good it hurts. Deceptively simple – but so effective.
